BeWell Network programs promote healthier lifestyle and disease prevention. We encourage people to adapt good nutritional habits and engage in physical activities to sustain good health & wellness. Together, we ACHIEVE healthier communities for children, adults and seniors.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 of every 3 U.S. adults had prediabetes in 2010. The vast majority of people living with prediabetes do not know they have it. That is 79 million Americans aged 20 years or older. Type 2 diabetes can cause heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, nerve damage and other health problems. The National Diabetes Prevention Program study is designed to bring to communities the evidence-based lifestyle change for preventing type 2 diabetes.
CDC encourages collaboration among federal & state agencies, community-based organizations, employers, insurers, health care professionals, and other organizations to get involved in the prevention of type 2 diabetes among people with prediabetes in United States.
It is important to find out early if you have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. If any one of the following characteristics applies to you, you should consider joining this program and getting a blood test from your healthcare provider for prediabetes and diabetes condition.
- I am 45 years of age or older.
- I am overweight.
- I have a parent with diabetes.
- I have a sister or brother with diabetes.
- My family background is African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Asian American, or Pacific Islander.
- I had diabetes while I was pregnant (gestational diabetes), or I gave birth to a baby weighing 9 pounds or more.
- I am physically active less than three times a week.
The National Diabetes Prevention Program will help you achieve changes in your lifestyle, such as improving food choices, increasing physical activity to at least 150 minutes per week, and lose up to 10 percent of your body weight so you can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.
